N + A New York is a finely crafted handmade jewelry line, founded by sisters Noriko and Akiko Sugawara. The creative duo hails from Yokohama, Japan and started the line together in NYC in 2007. I became familiar with their work through my favorite store, Still House, where I fell in love with their Seven Diamond Ring.
I love their jewelry because it is minimal in appearance yet rich with unique textures and details. Their work is inspired by the details that tend to go unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of ordinary life, such as the textures of rocks and leaves, the sparseness of branches in winter, cracks in subway walls and details of historic NYC buildings.
Noriko and Akiko welcomed me into their studio with open arms and plenty of smiles. It was inspiring to speak with such genuinely sweet and creative women and to see them at work. I was impressed by the beautiful details of their studio, such as Japanese hammers and tools, handmade drawer handles, and beautiful inspirational images subtly hanging throughout the studio.
All of their jewelry is handmade in their studio (aside from the casting) by the two sisters. Their jewelry is sold in their online shop and various stockists throughout the US, Canada, the UK, China and South Korea.
