A MEAL TO REMEMBER: AMASS, COPENHAGEN

September 29, 2015

When I was in Copenhagen a couple of weeks ago, I had two meals that resonated with me. The first was at AMASS and the second was at...well, I'm not going to divulge that just yet; I'll save that for a separate post.

Found on Refshalevej along the harbor, AMASS is situated on its own 500 square meter garden. The garden is a source of herbs, flowers and vegetables, which are incorporated into the restaurant's menu and also serves as a daily source of inspiration for the chefs. It is also a little oasis where guests can enjoy a coffee after dining at AMASS.

If I had to pinpoint why I loved this restaurant so much, I would have to say that every element of the experience, from the decor, to the presentation, to the flavors and the service, were all perfectly executed. Head chef and owner, Matt Orlando, not only creates unique and flawless dishes, he also combines every element of his restaurant into a dining experience and aesthetic that is a true work of art.

The meal began with fava beans, fermented Cep and rose hip vinegar, followed by tomatoes with wild blackberries, juniper oil and grilled fennel broth. While we waited for our next course, we nibbled on fermented potato bread, which was made from potatoes fermented for 10 days. The fish course proceeded with salted mackerel, peas and burnt lemon, followed by beet root, sour curd, mugwort and pickled yarrow flowers. The meat course was a perfectly prepared piece of organic pork neck, grains, walnut and green plums and our dessert was a potato ice cream with wild blueberries and dried vinegar.

To conclude the experience, we moved outside into the garden and sipped on coffee, while sampling small, sweet bites made from the previous day's recycled coffee grounds.

FROM SUMMER TO AUTUMN SHOES

September 23, 2015

It is always sad to see summer end, as our NYC winters are becoming dreadfully longer and more extreme. However, in choosing to see the positive in this change of season, I will talk about shoes that have been perfect for this summer-to-autumn transition. I got these shoes about a month ago and have enjoyed wearing them in the Copenhagen fall-like weather and through the Hawaiian heat (and humidity). They were perfect for travel since they are pretty compact and an easy solution to feeling chic when on the go. I typically have trouble wearing any type of shoe in the summer (everything seems to wreak havoc on my feet if worn without socks), but these didn't require any breaking in (!). They are light and airy enough to wear during summer weather but also have a nice texture to them which will easily make them fit for the cooler autumn weather.

HOTEL SP34, COPENHAGEN

September 21, 2015

Situated on the winding Sankt Peders Straede, Hotel SP34 is a peaceful respite in the heart of Copenhagen's Latin Quarter. The vibe is chic but friendly, luxurious but not stuffy, and the grey walls create a soothing atmosphere within the rooms. It was a pleasant surprise to see that the rooms are stocked with REN toiletries. The lobby is cheery and brightly lit via skylights during the day (and how could you not love the Carl Hansen pieces!?). The hotel offers a free happy hour each night, where guests gather in the lobby and bar area to socialize and to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine.

My trip to Copenhagen came up slightly last-minute, but I was luckily able to book a room here for one night (thanks to Hotel Tonight) during my trip; I left Hotel SP34 with the desire to return, my next time in Copenhagen, and also with the desire to paint my apartment grey.

A VISUAL ODE TO SUMMER

September 8, 2015

A summer that began with no set plans, resulted in a special weekend getaway with my great friends, a work trip to Copenhagen (much more to come on that later!) and a last minute work trip to Hawaii, for which I leave tomorrow morning. I couldn't be more thankful for these opportunities and not a day goes by where I don't thank my lucky stars. Even though I have one trip left, as summer comes to an end, I wanted to share some images from a trip to Cape Cod that I took with my girlfriends at the end of May.

These ladies have been in my life for over 15 years now and hold very special places in my heart. This wasn't merely a weekend getaway, rather a necessity for the soul, fueled by great friends.

If you are planning to visit Cape Cod, I highly recommend kayaking and taking long walks to swoon over all of the colorful hydrangeas.

If you are looking to travel to Cape Cod and need some references, we stayed in a town called Cotuit, in an AirBnB hosted by Karen. It looks like she has temporarily removed the listing for the off-season; however, I'm sure once she puts it back up, it will be accessible through her linked profile. Karen was beyond welcoming and hospitable and her place is highly recommended.
