On Finding the Perfect Dress

February 15, 2016

Finding the perfect dress is similar to finding your ideal mate: it happens when you least expect it. When it's the one, you know and it's usually completely different than one in which you pictured yourself. It also has to be one in which you are most comfortable and can feel your best self.

On a particularly rainy day in Hong Kong, I hopped from store to store to keep dry and haphazardly found myself in Vivienne Tam. Humoring my desire to purchase a nice dress (a category in which my closet is currently lacking) I grabbed a couple to try on.

The salesperson showed me this dress: the Pagoda Jacquard Metallic Techno Mesh Dress with 3D Bonsai Embroideries (quite a mouthful). The dress was essentially a shorter version of this gown from Tam's FW2015 collection. I was fascinated by the details and how well the patterns and textures fused together effortlessly and elegantly; however, I scrunched my nose and told him that I wasn't quite sure it would fit with my usual monochrome style. As any good matchmaker would do, he urged me to give it a chance. I tried it on and immediately fell for it. It fit like a glove, needed not one alteration and was even comfortable.

A woman is her most stunning when wearing a garment she loves and in which she feels most at ease; and as Coco Chanel says, beauty will then come when that comfort and love succeed.

Dress: Vivienne Tam (I can't find this for sale online, but this colorful option caught my eye, as did this pattern, and if you like jacquard, here is a cute option on sale) // Clutch: Vivienne Tam
