Chef Kwame Onwuachi x Chefs Club by Food and Wine

My first experience at Chefs Club was during this past Chinese New Year, where Chef Brandon Jew served up a festive banquet-style feast in the studio. As part of its new series of chef dinners, Chefs Club by Food and Wine hosts premiers of the most anticipated restaurants opening. To ring in the year of the Monkey, diners shared an exclusive sneak peak at some of the Chinese-American dishes that Chef Brandon Jew will be serving at Mister Jiu's (slated to open in San Francisco in early 2016).

This month, Chef Kwame Onwuachi took over the main dining room at Chefs Club. You may recognize Chef Kwame from Season 13 of Top Chef, or perhaps you recognize him as the dynamic chef opening a greatly anticipated restaurant, The Shaw Bijou, in Washington, D.C. As part of his Chefs Club main dining room takeover, he showcased dishes from his new menu, such as Hamachi, Butter Garlic Crab, Chicken and Lamb over Rice, Foie Haw and Steak and Eggs...just a taste of what's to come at The Shaw Bijou opening in May 2016.

Chef Kwame was born in the Bronx and has also called Nigeria and Louisiana home at one point or another. To help pay for culinary school, he sold candy on the subway and parlayed that opportunity into positions at Eleven Madison Park and Per Se. Chef Kwame uses cooking as his outlet to share these experiences; as a whole, his food evokes a sense of nostalgia with each dish serving as a chapter of his story.

His next chapter will commence in D.C.'s Northwest neighborhood at The Shaw Bijou, which he is opening with his former Eleven Madison Park colleague and Culinary Institute of America roommate, Greg Vakiner. What to expect? A 15 to 18 course tasting menu will most likely be served in the main dining room, while the second floor members-only bar will specialize in rare and vintage liquors. Other perks diners might expect are a dry-aged Wagyu beef program, herb garden, house-made charcuterie and beverage pairings. Chef Kwame reports that there will also be an interactive element to the dining, including tableside cooking and a kitchen tour. The idea is to present the diners with an experience that's about more than the food. The servers will also be tasked with helping tell the story to the diners.

This Afternoon's Accessories

The next segment of This Afternoon's Accessories is upon us and I would like to feature the Cuyana Saddle Bag. In efforts to have fewer things of better quality, I have been diligently purging my closet of items that I no longer wear, items that don't fit quite right or that don't truly reflect my aesthetic. I've narrowed down to about four bags of various sizes and colors to rotate as my go-tos, depending on my size and needs for the day. 

This bag has surely made the cut as an essential. I love the neutral color and how flattering it sits when being worn - not too bulky, yet large enough to fit my Sony a7rii and iPhone 6s Plus. The perfect strap adjustment also saved me a trip to the cobbler. As a petit person, I typically have to have extra holes punched in my bag straps to have the drop fit properly; but with this beauty, I just took it out of the packaging and easily adjusted it to perfection.
